A close family source told, on Saturday that Cedric Babu Ndilima, a well-known Ugandan media personality, sports administrator, and political figure, had passed away at the age of 46.
Days after a public fundraising campaign was started to help pay for an urgent heart transplant overseas, Babu passed away.
In a brief phone conversation, his stepmother, Margaret Nantongo Zziwa, confirmed his passing. Officially, the cause of death was not revealed.
Babu was airlifted to Nairobi for critical care after collapsing during a tennis tournament in Kigali, Rwanda, earlier this month.
His only chance of survival, according to the doctors, was a transplant after they determined that he had severe heart failure.
To pay for the procedure and associated costs, the family started a fundraising campaign to raise roughly Shs1.5 billion.
Babu first became well-known across the country in the early 2000s as a captivating TV host. In addition to his role as president of the Uganda Tennis Association, he was a former national tennis champion who captained Uganda’s Davis Cup team and promoted international engagement and grassroots development.
In 2021, he also entered politics by running for a seat in parliament under the National Resistance Movement (NRM), which is currently in power. His attempt failed.
Additionally, he had ties to the Patriotic League of Uganda, where he was Kampala’s vice chairman.
The PLU describes itself as a pressure group that developed from the MK Movement, which was headed by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the military chief and the powerful son of President Museveni.
