UACE: As the number of candidates increases, performance declines

What you should know:

This indicates a slight decline in performance, with 98.8% of candidates passing the test as opposed to 99.2% in 2023. Compared to 865 in 2023, 1,632 candidates failed the exams overall.

Although performance was slightly lower than in 2023, 98.8% of candidates who took the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams in 2024 passed.

Mr. Daniel Odongo, Executive Director of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), announced the results at State Lodge Nakasero on Friday, March 14, 2025. He confirmed that 140,888 of the 141,996 candidates who registered for the UACE took the exams.

Following at least a subsidiary pass in a principal subject, 139,256 of the exam takers were eligible for the UNEB UACE certificate.

54,338 candidates achieved the highest possible score of three principal passes based on their overall performance. Following this were 29,233 with one principal pass, 17,750 with one subsidiary pass, and 37,985 with two principal passes.

This indicates a minor decline in performance, with 98.8% of candidates passing the exams as opposed to 99.2% in 2023. Compared to 865 in 2023, 1,632 candidates failed the exams overall.

Mr. Odongo added that 92,274 applicants who passed the exams are eligible to enroll in colleges. A minimum of two principal level passes has historically been required for university admission to degree programs.

92,273 applicants (65.5%) are eligible for university admission if this criterion is upheld, as opposed to 80,816 (73.8%) in 2023. This is consistent with the notable surge in applications for the 2024 exams,” Mr. Odongo stated.

“To accommodate these candidates, 11,457 more university spots must be made available,” he continued. 121,506 applicants (86.2%) will be eligible for admission to other postsecondary institutions if one principal pass and two subsidiary passes are accepted.
